The opening exchanges were evenly matched, but it was clear we were a little rusty after the break, while Llanfyllin settled quickly into their rhythm. Their strong fly-half and inside centre were used to great effect, testing our defence from early on
Despite that, our players battled hard, with moments of individual flair breaking through the opposition lines and keeping us firmly in the contest.
On a hot day, it was an attritional battle that took its toll on both sides. At half-time we trailed, having crossed for two unconverted tries against Llanfyllin’s four.
The second half saw Llanfyllin extend their lead to 27 points and it looked like the game might slip away but our players had other ideas. What followed was a phenomenal fightback, full of spirit and ambition, as we clawed our way back to within a single score. In the final moments, we were just one kick away from an incredible win, but it wasn’t to be. Llanfyllin edged us out in what was a rip-roaring encounter that had everyone on the edge of their seats.
A huge congratulations as well to our Year 9 fullback Morgan, who was outstanding in both defence and attack and came agonisingly close to scoring in the second half.
It was a performance full of positives, with a healthy-looking squad heading into next season. Our Year 9 players gained invaluable experience, and the Year 10s showed real mettle many clearly ready to make the step into 1st XV rugby next year.
