World Book Day

Published: 03.03.2022 ( 2 years ago )

Today Thursday 3rd March 2022, we are celebrating the annual World Book Day. While Covid has brought many challenges, more people have turned to books and at St David’s College, we won’t let the moment pass without sharing our love of reading and creating a buzz around stories – fact or fiction.

We took part in a national online quiz for pupils in Years 5-7 provided by The National Literacy Trust. Described as a ‘Footy and Booky Quiz’, this quiz features the authors of Football School: Terrific Teams Alex Bellos and Ben Lyttleton and is hosted by Kelly Sommers. Whether pupils are footy fans or not, they are had an enjoyable time!

To celebrate World Book Day, we also invited all pupils to take part in dressing up as their favourite book character. We have encouraged parents to help their children get into the spirit of dressing up, without the need to purchase expensive costumes.

Staff in all curriculum areas discussed their favourite book or what they are currently reading; then reading little extract as a taster for the pupils! We believe that sharing the stories we are reading is a great way to inspire others to pick up a book or listen to one, and we are getting some great recommendations from our pupils in return.

Years 5 and 6 are also having a streamed poetry reading session from the much-loved children’s author and poet. Michael Rosen was the Children’s Laureate from 2007-2009 and we are sure the pupils will have a wonderful time being inspired by him and his love of literature.

The book tokens were also being distributed today. They can be used to redeem a free World Book Day book, or as a £1 off book token for print and audio books.

We really hope everybody had a wonderful day on World’s Book Day.
