Applied Science, Level 3, is ideal for anyone who is interested in science but doesn’t want to specialise in the individual Science Advanced Levels.
This qualification is equivalent to an Advanced Level and ideal for those who excel with coursework-based tasks.
The Applied Science course covers key concepts in Physical, Chemical and Biological science, including cells and tissues; genetics; atomic structure, chemical and physical properties, and waves. The course also covers analytical and investigative practical techniques, with an emphasis on developing practical skills.
Students complete 4 units over the 2 years, 2 of which are internally assessed by coursework. There are 2 externally assessed units, with 1 examined unit (3 papers), and 1 externally marked practical skills assessment. Students are awarded the equivalent of one A level on successful completion.
Learners develop transferable and higher skills valued by higher education providers and employers. Typical sectors include: nursing and healthcare, sports and nutrition, engineering, biological & physical sciences, and environmental & earth sciences. The qualification can be taken as part of a diverse programme, leaving progression options fully open. It can also give context to subjects which would benefit from some scientific background.
