Year 10 mountaineers reach new heights

Over the years, the Year 10 Mountaineering Expeditions have been exploring peaks and ranges all across Europe. This years group opted for the extra challenge of attempting the highest mountain in North Africa. The summit of Jebel Toubkal, the highest of Morocco’s Atlas Mountains stands at 4167m and takes several days to ascend. After scaling some acclimatisation peaks and getting used to the remote ‘Berber’ way of life, the team began to hike their way towards the Toubkal basecamp. To add an extra element to our summit day, we set off by headtorch at 3am and made it to the summit in time to watch the sun rise over the distant Sahara desert. In an enormous eleven hour mountain day, they summited the main peak, completed a scramble up a neighbouring mountain and descended 2222m to the nearest village some 20km away! A huge achievement for any mountaineer, but all the more impressive by a group of Year 10 pupils.
