St David's College Welcomes New Pastoral Officer

Mrs. Gabriella Murphy

One of the things St David’s College can be justifiably proud of is its exemplary pastoral care.

Pastoral care during these times of great uncertainty will only increase in importance as our pupils negotiate the road ahead.

It is only natural that some children will be experiencing increased levels of anxiety and other mental health issues. With this in mind, the school has developed a brand-new Pastoral Officer role, who will work as an assistant to Sue Davies, Head of Boarding and Assistant Head of Pastoral Care. We are pleased to announce Mrs. Murphy has taken up the role. The mother of two worked for 20 years at Rydal Penrhos as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and Religious Studies, a Head of Key Stage 3, and was seconded to Deputy Head. She was also the Designated Safeguarding Lead.

“What I really like about St David’s College is that pastoral care is clearly an important focus for the school,” she said.

“I like that the attitude is that we can always do better and that pastoral care can continue to be developed.”

“It’s brilliant that the Chaplaincy has a designated safe place where pupils can go, that is vitally important.”

Mrs. Murphy said pupils are welcome to come to her office, that she shares with Mrs. Davies for a chat at any time.

She said: “Young people have a lot going on at present ranging from the pandemic to schoolwork to climate change.

“It is inevitable with what’s being going on in the world that more children will be suffering from increased anxiety and so on.

“I and others will be helping them manage this and to also help develop resilience.”

Mrs. Murphy added: “I’ve only been here for a short while but what is already apparent is that St David’s seems a very happy school, and a happy child learns.”
