Our Badminton Star

Amelie Chandran is quickly becoming the one to watch when it comes to badminton on both a regional and national level. She already has an impressive number of championship wins under her belt, currently holding titles such as Winner of under 14 Singles Great Orme Junior Tournament 2019 and Winner of under 14 Singles Conwy County Junior Championships 2019. Amelie often plays in age categories above her own (she is currently 11) and when asked whether she gets nervous playing against older players, she says:

“I do get a bit nervous at first but then once I start the match and work out how they play, I get more confident.”

Earlier this year, Amelie played for Wales in the 2020 U13s Celtic Challenge Tournament in Northern Ireland near Belfast. Wales came second overall which was a great achievement. It was the first time Amelie has represented Wales and it was a very exciting weekend from the start. The atmosphere was fantastic with drums and chanting throughout the two day tournament. Teams competed from Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Southern Ireland. Amelie loved being part of the team which was very supportive and there were social events with teams from all nations with friendships being formed throughout.

"I loved playing doubles and I hope to play for Wales again in the future," comments Amelie about the whole experience.

Amelie was recently awarded the James Wiseman Merit Award for effort, commitment and performance in badminton. She trains with the Great Orme Club at Bryn Estyn in Deganwy twice weekly and was also training with the Regional Academy in Mold before Lockdown.

Amelie first started playing badminton after watching her older brother play who is also a regional champion (see Amelie pictured with Oliver). They are both coached by Joe Hill.

“He’s a really good coach,” Amelie explains. “He’s patient and he helps us a lot.”

Amelie and Oliver have stayed fit this year while they have not been able to train and play.

“We have been bike riding, running, and playing badminton in the garden together with our own net,” she says. “I’ve also used the Teambuildr app in PE lessons during Lockdown and we both took part in the Headmaster’s Everest Challenge by walking, running, and cycling.”

Since returning to school in September, Amelie has been working on her core strength and conditioning organised by the PE staff and even goes to the school gym at lunchtimes to complete her bespoke programme.

Training resumed in September and Amelie was at the centre every Tuesday and Thursday evening.

“I thought we would be really bad after such a long break but we were just the same,” she smiles. All of the fitness must have paid off. Amelie is looking forward to returning to training after the Firebreak is over and hoping to compete in tournaments again next year once they are up and running again.
