Oliver tipped for the top

Not many 10-year-olds can say they’ve appeared in a play on the West End and spend their weekends recording shows for Radio Wales.

Year six pupil Oliver, from Old Colwyn, is already making quite a name for himself and even has his own agent.

He said he had “great fun” recording the Radio Wales play called The Learners alongside well-known comedians Les Dennis and Tudur Owen. The play will be on air on Radio Wales on January 4.

Oliver's acting journey began a couple of years ago when he joined a local drama group and very quickly found success. After auditioning he landed a part in Priscilla Queen of the Desert which was showing at the time in a touring production at Rhyl Pavilion Theatre. He found himself acting alongside stars Jason Donovan and Joe McGann, who played his dad.

“I love theatre as I don’t get too nervous,” said Oliver.

“The radio play was fun too. Owen Tudur and Les Dennis were both really nice to me and I was the only kid in the play.”

He added: “We had a run-through with the lines and then it took about four takes to complete.”

Oliver is also a supremely accomplished cellist-having already passed Grade 7. Until Covid struck he usually plays in an orchestra in Flintshire alongside other gifted young musicians.

“My brother Thomas is a really good pianist, and I practice the cello for around an hour each day apart from Saturday.”

Oliver joined St David’s College in September, when asked what he liked best about the school, he said: “The teachers are really supportive here especially Mr. Russell, Mrs. George, and Ms. Fielden.”

He added: “What I really like about here is that the classes are really small. At my first primary school, there were 31 in a class, so you couldn’t really get the teacher’s attention if you needed help.”

“I also found it really easy to make friends at St David’s, and I feel I’ve fitted in really well.”

Year Five and Year Six are busy rehearsing for the nativity play which will be a virtual event this year. Oliver is playing Caleb-the inn-keeper, Marcel-the restaurant owner, and shepherd three. We can’t wait to see it!
