Old Davidean Nightingale Legend

When Tim Collins (SDC 1993) and his family visited St David’s in August 2018, little did he realise he would be part of a strategic team to create the largest hospital in the world in a matter of days!

Tim is at the leading edge of research and teaching in critical care.

His official biography reads: "Dr Tim Collins has around 20 years’ experience within critical care working in a variety of positions within Intensive Care, Critical Care Outreach and Higher Education. Holding positions as Consultant Nurse, Lead Nurse, Charge Nurse, ICU Educator & Senior Lecturer. Tim is currently a British Association of Critical Care Nurses (BACCN) elected national board member and sits on the editorial board for Nursing in Critical Care Journal (Wiley). He has undertaken a number of presentations at European & International conferences and has published a number of papers in peer reviewed journals and book chapters. Tim holds a Doctorate in Education and a MSc in Critical Care and is an Instructor in both Adult and Paediatric Advanced Life Support. Tim has specialist interests in Sepsis, Clinical shock, vascular access, Resuscitation, Organ Donation and Haemodynamic monitoring."

Yesterday Tim wrote, “I have been very busy, I have been involved setting up the NHS I have worked with a great team, and I have been involved with writing an educational curriculum to try and up-skill non-ICU nurses and doctors with the knowledge and skills to care for patients at the NHS nightingale at the Excel. I have been teaching staff and helping to prepare the Excel for taking patients, the Excel has now opened and has capacity for 4000 patients and is the biggest hospital in the world. It was amazing to be involved in this project as we have achieved so much within a limited time.

Due to the space and social distancing, we have set up a critical care training centre on the stage of the O2 arena.

The hospital is taking patients and supporting London hospitals, today we discharged 3 patients but the M of COVID is that once you get mechanically ventilated mortality rate is high.

It’s all been very challenging but also very rewarding and shows how much can be achieved in such a short time through great team work and planning!

Dr Tim Collins – never, ever, ever, give up! You are precisely why our world needs dyslexics!
