Looking Back - School Production Week

This week would normally be School Production week, so we are having a look back over some of our past productions. Our annual musical production has been a school tradition for many years. While it is unfortunate that an all-singing, all-dancing theatre production will not be possible this year, it is wonderful to see St David’s pupils adapt and embrace their performance skills and retain their enthusiasm for the Performing Arts.

This has been evident in the performances for the live-streamed Christmas Carol Service edited by Production Arts teacher, Mr. Cogger, and the first-ever St David’s College School Nativity performance, expertly directed by Miss Fielden and Mrs. George and performed by years 5 and 6.

'The Lion King Experience’ is allowing pupils to further develop their skills in preparation for a hopeful School Production in the future.

In 2017, Mrs Appleton discovered the First World War story “The Battle of Boat”, written especially for the National Youth Theatre. This was performed in the Arena at Venue Cymru and our Art students designed and built the set – 4-meter-high framed panels covered with maps of the Battle of the Somme. Our production was the Welsh Premiere.

The vibrant and colourful ‘Hairspray’ was performed at Theatr Colwyn in 2018. The cast embraced the 1950’s costumes and backstage was quite literally filled with hairspray to keep the backcombed beehive hairdos in place!

In 2019, our pupils became basketball players, drama students, and science club brain boxes for the all-American production of ‘High School Musical’. The audience delighted in the well-known songs such as ‘We’re all in This Together’ and ‘Get’cha head in the Game.’

Below is our last production, the much-loved ‘Peter Pan’. Our pupils took us on the magical adventure to Neverland with a singing, dancing, squash-buckling, sword-fighting adventure. This was the last performance in Theatre Colwyn before it closed for Lockdown last year.

We couldn’t not include one picture of the splurge-tastic ‘Bugsy Malone’ from 2016 (oh the fun we had!)

So much time, effort, and energy is dedicated to our school productions. From performance to stage design to sound, backstage, lighting, costume, and orchestra, there are so many opportunities for our pupils to work together as one big team across the year groups and with so many talents, skills, and interests. Mr. Russell has described it as “the best team sport ever!”
