Lions show strength in derby win

This was a win based in defeat, hard work and dedication. Cold Monday nights under lights, Fridays in the rain. These are what is needed to become better in any walk of life.

Dyffryn Conwy came to St Davids College with a strong reputation and many teams would have folded in the light of big, strong direct running, but the St Davids 1stXV is maturing into cohesive band, strong committed and focused.

The first half saw the 1stXV player up the famous hill towards the Snowdonia mountain range. It was Dyffryn that applied lots of pressure using their big runners to gain yards. But the SDC line remained intact and broke free with excellent runs from Malone & Best in the centres. From this the SDC pack with Molone and Mair created several opportunities and Dyffryn infringed and where eventually penalised somewhat harshly with a penalty try.

The second half saw SDC start to hit their stride with their backs stringing solid moves together and Fly Half Roberts kicking astutely.

But it was Dyffryn who struck first with a score beneath the posts.

The next score came from SDC and a well slotted penalty from Roberts. The opposition then capitalised from lax St Davids play and penalties and again scored beneath the posts. St David’s were now confident with the ball in hand, varying Attack from 9 & 10 with co-captain Goodwin putting in a huge shift carrying the ball. This tenacious attack made it difficult for the opposition to settle. Eventually the pressure told and a penalty was given 10 meters in front of the posts. Most teams would kick for goal, take a scrum, but this group, given licence to play, tapped the ball and cross field kicked for Cole to score! Rapturous applause from the supporters and my heart rate through the roof. Off the kick off SDC continued with their game plan and hit wide with Best and Hooker Lyons taking the ball into the opposition 22, several phases later Palmer Hall barged over to take the lead beyond a Single score. In the dying moments Dyffryn again pressed but solid defence held out for a win.
