Lily Cousins Climbs to the Top!

It’s always a special occasion when one of our own has their work published and this is no different. Lily Cousins (year 12) has written a review of her winter climbing exploits in the Ogwen Valley in Snowdonia National Park. The article titled ‘Steep Steps’ is featured in the Spring edition of the BMC (British Mountaineering Council) members’ magazine ‘Summit’. This publication is circulated to 81,000 members all of whom are keen walkers and climbers. It details Lily’s adventures at altitude in the stunning snow filled mountains we are so lucky to have during the Winter months here in North Wales.

In the article, Lily explains that “Winter climbing, whilst I’m fairly new to it, has to be my favourite form of activity. The beauty of ice and snow, coupled with the exhilaration of climbing a hidden surface over a powdery white world is an experience like no other.”

Even though Lily is a relative novice to Winter Climbing, she is an experienced mountaineer having started climbing at a young age with her parents. Since joining the school, she has shown off her skills on many expeditions and as part of the weekly St David’s College Outdoor Education curriculum.

Head of Outdoor Education, Mr. Ian Martin said, “Lily is an absolute delight to have at St David’s College, she’s a real credit to the school. Her determination to try something new and improve her skills is phenomenal. For someone so young to really want to push themselves to improve every time they take part in an activity is great to see.”

“And it’s not just in Outdoor Ed!” Ian went on. “As you can see from the incredible article that she has produced, she’s pretty spectacular when it comes to the written word too. We’re all immensely proud of her.”

Mrs. Jen Turner, Head of English said, “Lily is so talented! We’re over the moon that her work has been included in this edition of ‘Summit’. She has a real ability to transport the reader through the use of language and being published in a national magazine is something that Lily should be very proud of. I know that I’m definitely very proud of her indeed.”

Lily’s achievements and writing have also impressed further afield. The President of the BMC, Lynn Robinson was full of praise for Lily’s article. Lynn took the time to drop Lily a message saying: “It was a joy to read and through your words, I was transported to the climb with you. The small details were just delightful, for example, you stopping off to create a snow angel! I could really relate to your experience.”

Well done, Lily!
