Exeat Cancellation - Arrangements for Boarders only

Dear Boarding Parent,

As a result of the announcements made last night from both Westminster and the devolved Welsh Government, it is with some reluctance that I have cancelled the travel arrangement plans for boarders this coming weekend. Whilst it is gratifying to see that the home nations are aligning in their new plans, in Wales the restrictions have been strengthened in part due to the issues faced in South Wales and the desire to avoid a second lockdown.

First Minister, Mark Drakeford announced that only essential travel can happen in Wales.  As St David's College has the capacity to remain open to the boarding community this weekend, it is not essential that boarding pupils travel home.

I understand that many of you will have made plans to see your children either at home or here in North Wales and as such someone will be in touch today to confirm what may or may not be able to happen.  Please see this link to fully understand the difference in the regional arrangements and why we have been moved to make this decision.

If you are able to justify why it is essential for your son or daughter to travel at the weekend please have that conversation with a member of the boarding staff.  Our concern is that with many areas of the UK moving into additional regional restrictions there is an added and unnecessary risk in transiting between areas.

It is also unfortunately not an option to send a boarding pupil to a local household despite many day parents being able to offer that respite.  So, unless there is already a standing agreement that your family is one of the four in an extended family within Wales and that the 'rule of six' is adhered to no boarder may stay offsite at a local family household.

Of course, the decisions that we are all making day in and day out must be borne from the perspective of the safety of our community to ensure that we are able to provide unimpeded education for all in the real world.  I desperately want St David's College to remain open for as long as is possible and it is only our collective understanding and action that will ensure this happens.

Best wishes

Andrew Russell
