Education & welfare of pupils & staff will remain at the forefront of everything we do

A message from the Headmaster

St David’s College is determined that the education and welfare of our pupils will remain at the forefront of everything we do. When the first lockdown was put in place in March 2020, we transitioned our academic programme to online learning and our staff were able to implement the virtual learning platform within a matter of days. I am hugely proud of their professionalism and expertise.

St David’s has worked tirelessly to help to ensure the health, safety, and mental well-being of our staff and pupils throughout not only the first lockdown but the following months. We have used technology to our advantage to create exciting and engaging opportunities to excel in a challenging environment.

Mark Drakeford (Wales' First Minister) has confirmed that Wales will remain in lockdown with schools closed until the 29th January and that stronger measures are being implemented in numerous sectors. The Welsh Government have also said that if there is not a significant downturn in the infection rate that schools will remain closed until the February half-term break.

He added that the national education provision will now be included in a three weekly review cycle along with the other sectors in Wales. We will make announcements as soon as we have further information.

Once again, we will continue with our full timetable of online lessons and ensure that each individual child's welfare remains our primary focus. The Chaplaincy will be available to support children and parents throughout and further details of our welfare package is available on the Parents Information page on our website. Twice daily contact with tutors will remain crucial to ensure maximum engagement for all.

We are rolling out our extended online curriculum which will include physical and intellectual challenges up to the end of the school day and beyond if required. It is my hope that pupils and families will engage in these activities if possible, working towards achieving the targets and challenges set, maintaining the community spirit and by doing so extending our connection and all our care for St David's families at home. I am ever mindful of the need to reduce screen time and the staff delivering this programme will ensure that this is a major factor in the offering.

I am sorry that exams have been cancelled for those who have diligently prepared for each sitting in the coming weeks. Rest assured that teachers at St David's will be compiling grades and assessments over the next few weeks to ensure that we are prepared to give as accurate an assessment as possible when the time comes. We will announce any further guidance as it becomes available to schools but if you have any questions in the meantime please contact your tutors.

These are the most challenging of times, the journey travelled so far has allowed us to be confident in our ability to be flexible and adaptable when faced with last-minute changes in short term plans. However, I am confident that we are on what seems like the uphill stage of the home straight in the race against this even faster-moving variant of the virus.

I look forward to the time we can all be together again on site, witnessing the incredible talent that daily assembles in our precious school.

Mr Andrew Russell
