Duke of Edinburgh honours our golden students at Buckingham Palace

Nine of our former and present students were invited to Buckingham Palace this week to receive their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards.

HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, Patron of the DofE, the Earl of Wessex and the Countess of Wessex, welcomed 3,000 Gold Award winners into the gardens of the Palace.

The DofE allows young people to develop skills that are transferable to the workplace. It gives them the opportunity to evidence real life situations where soft skills are gained in applications and interviews. Over 100 top UK employers have endorsed a DofE programme for the skills and attributes a young person develops.

Over 50 high profile presenters were also on hand to congratulate the young people on their Gold Award success, showing commitment, determination and resilience to complete their DofE journey. Presenters included comedian, Bill Bailey, impressionist Jon Culshaw, Olympic medallist Louis Smith, McFly’s Tom Fletcher and Blur’s Alex James.

Achieving a Gold Award is no easy feat. Those taking part have to volunteer for 12 months, learn a new skill, do a four day and three night exhibition, and undertake a shared activity in a residential setting away from home for five days.

Ian Martin, who is St David's Head of Outdoor Education, said: "One of our students James, who is in the Sixth Form, has blasted his way through the Gold award, there's not many students who can complete their Gold whilst still at school as there's so many tasks to do and it's really quite tough-that's why they have up until the age of 25 to complete it."

He continued: "It really is a very worthwhile thing to do as it gives the young person something to talk about in their university application and job interviews."

"Going through all the tasks means you learn teamwork, learn new skills, meet new people and become more resilient," added Mr Martin.
