Cathedral city visit

Year 8 recently visited both the Anglican and Catholic Cathedrals in Liverpool on their Outdoor Education day as part of their Religious Education studies.

The magnificent Anglican Cathedral constructed between 1904 to 1978 is the longest cathedral in the world and also ranks as the fifth-largest cathedral on the planet.

The Grade II Metropolitan Cathedral known locally as the "Catholic Cathedral", was designed by the architect Frederick Gibberd. Construction began in 1962 and was completed in 1967. Earlier designs for a cathedral to be even bigger than the Anglican were proposed in 1933 and 1953, but none were completed.

Jack, Year 8, said about the day: "It was a really interesting tour around the Liverpool Cathedral, it's so huge and well built and it was fun going to the top to see a bird's eye view of Liverpool.

"But my favourite cathedral was the Catholic one as it's such an unusual design, and looks like a space ship, and I liked the stained glass windows."
