A working holiday in Oz in store for two talented teachers

English teacher Felicity Smith and 1:1 specialist support teacher Danielle Peevor will be sharing how they teach pupils with specialist learning difficulties (SpLD) in the UK.

The two of them will be travelling as a team of five with each member coming from a slightly different educational setting including a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator), from Cheshire whose prime area of interest is mental health, a teaching assistant who works with autistic students, and an ex-teacher whose area of specialism is working with students who have physical disabilities. They will visit Queensland, visiting a wide range of educational institutions delivering INSET courses focusing on their areas of specialism.

“I applied to be part of the team because I feel that sharing ideas with other education professionals is the best way to help develop a better quality of education for the young people we teach,” said Miss Smith.

She continued: “I hope that the experience will allow me to share the education model we have at St. David’s and spread the word even further afield about who we are and what we do.”

“I am also excited to see how the Australian system differs to our own, hopefully bringing back some ideas I can share with colleagues here.”

“I have taught at St. David’s for six years now and before coming here had very limited experience of teaching pupils with SpLD.”

Miss Smith added: “Taking up a post teaching English here meant that I had to think about my own teaching in a completely different way.

“Teaching pupils with SpLD in a mainstream classroom setting is challenging – ensuring that pupils with a wide range of difficulties can access the lesson requires an ability to think outside the box and be willing to try new and unusual approaches.”

We wish Miss Smith and Mrs Peevor the very best of luck for their month long educational adventure.
