How new technology is helping our dyslexic pupils

Dyslexia Awareness Week has taken SDC by storm, with the Cadogan centre being decked out with green balloons in honour of #Gogreenfordyslexia.

At St David’s we have been highlighting on social media many of our own sector leading practices and interest in our expertise with trips to the SEN show and the Jersey SEN Seminars have cemented our position in this specialist arena.

Many buildings across the land have been lit up in green for the #Gogreenfordyslexia campaign, including Bristol Zoo Gardens, Cardiff Bay Barrage and Royal London Buildings also in Bristol. Over 150 schools and over 3,000 children all over the country are also supporting the Go Green Campaign by dressing in green for the day. Art teacher Mari Hughes and pupils have been very busy in the art department drawing 21st Century themed pictures-explaining what it is like to be dyslexic.

“One in ten people are dyslexic and in recent years identification, understanding and technology has come on leaps and bounds so this year’s Dyslexia Awareness Week is all about 21st century dyslexia,” said Dr Faye Favell, head of SENCO at SDC.

“Assisted technology is removing barriers to learning, and helping people becoming independent, continued Dr Favell.

“We are embracing it as much as we can, and this technology will help set up pupils to go into further education and so on.”

Microsoft and the British Dyslexia Association are presently working on a joint research project at St David’s, with some of our most dyslexic pupils. On laptops they are using Microsoft 365 learning tools such as the immersive reader to help build reading, writing and comprehension skills during lessons.

“A lot of our teachers are now putting their lessons online so that they can be accessed at any time by pupils, they can go through and rewind what they learnt during the lesson,” explained Dr Favell.

“It means ultimately the pupil will become more confident, and in the long run hopefully will no longer need a scribe or a reader.”
