Old Davidean's Flying Visit

SDC had a surprise visit this week by Old Davidean Lieutenant Ben Daw who arrived in a Royal Navy Merlin helicopter. The £19m aircraft was flown by Ben, from their Cornish airbase, in a flight that took only one and a half hours.

Ben was keen to see his former school and teachers as well as his very proud Year 8 nephew Marley. The whole school gave the crew an excited welcome as they came to watch the landing in one of the tennis courts.

The crew were at SDC for over an hour and delighted pupils who were lucky enough to get a tour inside the impressive aircraft that is primarily used for anti-submarine warfare.

SDC Deputy head Steve Delaney said of the memorable visit: “It was an exciting day and the pupils and staff really enjoyed seeing the helicopter and meeting the crew.

“I know that it was a wonderful surprise for Marley and his class were thrilled.”

He added: “The crew were excellent with the pupils and they were enthusiastic all day wearing their Royal Navy stickers and asking about careers in the military!”

Ben, who left the school in 2001, completed a degree in Computer Science at Aberystwyth University before being selected to join the Royal Navy in 2007 to train as a Pilot.

Ben said: “The crew all appreciated the warm and enthusiastic welcome they received and got a lot of satisfaction and enjoyment out of the day.

“I’m very close to Marley, so it was special to come for that reason, but I also hoping to provide some inspiration and confidence to the pupils.”
