Up close - BTEC Science

Last Monday the Year 10 BTEC class had the chance to see classification in action at the Welsh Mountain Zoo, Colwyn Bay. 8 pupils took part in a classification workshop in the zoo’s education centre and got to meet some of the zoo’s more weird and wonderful characters. Tilly from Year 10 was enthused by the hands-on element, “It’s one thing to learn about horse evolution”, she observed, “but quite another thing to actually hold a Zebra’s skull in your hand.” Joe said, “I was nervous at first, but it was really interesting handling the Hissing Cockroach, it wasn’t at all like the cockroaches I see in Hong Kong”.

The pupils were also trialling the new integrated cloud leaning system in Microsoft Office 365. Wil, who is working towards his Science BTEC said “I got a great picture of me holding the Stick Insect, and I could use it directly in my assignment via Microsoft One Note and Sway. It’s awesome to get back from a school trip to find all your work is already done and waiting for you in the classroom.”

After the talk the pupils had the chance to complete their assignment by walking around the zoo photographing and describing the animals they saw. “Reading about a mammal in a book is alright but being just a couple of metres away from a real tiger that is chewing on a massive bone is awesome” said Piers. A few of the pupils were really taken with some of the zoo’s smaller residents “The meerkats were bare cute!” enthused Marcus.
