"The secret of our success"

SDC is fast garnering a well-deserved reputation for producing entrepreneurial students with excellent business skills. For the last five years in a row, a raft of pupils have made it to the finals of the Real Business Challenge (held at the Principality Stadium, Cardiff) winning in 2012 and placed third in the UK Final at Wembley Stadium the same year.

Our student Julius was awarded BTEC Business and Enterprise Student of the Year Award 2016, Adam Rosslee was a Semi-Finalist of the Student Investor Challenge 2018, Rachna -won Young Enterprise Tenner Challenge Most Inspirational Individual 2017, Ultra Education Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2017 and has just learnt she’s being awarded BTEC Business and Enterprise Student of the Year Award 2018 and is in the running for Overall BTEC Student of the Year Award 2018-all extraordinary achievements.

A lot of this success is down to SDC Assistant Head of Academic Mark Turner.

“He pushes me to my absolute limit,” admits Rachna. “It’s also about team work and Mr Turner and I make a very good team together. “Coming to St David’s has given me so many more opportunities than I had in my international school in India.”

When asked what is the secret to the pupils’ success.

“It’s about identifying potential business entrepreneurs and pushing them to work hard.

“Some of my most successful pupils might not be the most academically bright but they have that

spark, and are willing to work hard and listen,” said Mr Turner.

He continued: “It also helps we’ve got good contacts within the school in industry.

“In the past we’ve had students that have gone on to become very interesting entrepreneurs, one of them for instance became a cigar maker and had a contract with Bugatti. He was flying around South America, and another has opened a gin distillery.”

Mr Turner says he’s “immensely proud” of all his students, and when he heard of Rachna’s latest success he admits he may even have become a little emotional.

“That’s not like me at all, but I was just so pleased for her,” he said.

He and SDC head Andy Russell are planning to introduce entrepreneurship lessons next year.

“We will have a range of interesting speakers coming in to speak to the students, it’s about sparking that interest and who knows we may find a future Richard Branson.”
