My St David's - Sara

Sara Roberts, Year 13, geography, maths and design technology student-hopes to go on and study product design at Loughborough University.

Sara joined SDC half-way through year eight, after struggling at a Welsh comprehensive.

Despite being what she describes herself as being a “little behind” when she first arrived at the school, she immediately started thriving because of the small class sizes.

“I began to do better straight away, as I’d come from a class of 35 in my other school to small classes of nine,” explained Sara.

“In bigger classes it’s quite easy to hide if you’re struggling, but at St David’s you can’t just sit back hoping you won’t get noticed.”

Sara’s move to SDC worked, in her GCSE’s she achieved a very impressive five A*, four A’s, and a couple of B grades.

“Apart from the small class sizes what really helped were the teachers, they are all very approachable,” she said.

“They are willing to help, and very easy to chat with. The school is very much like a family.

“Everybody says that about St David’s, but it is true.”

Sara says before she came to the school she had no interest at all in design.

The 18-year-old has since designed a Scandi influenced chair, a Sitski and is working on a coffee maker.

“I remember my first ever project at SDC was a working lamp, and I loved having to design and model it,” she said.

“It sparked my interest in product design, I also enjoy the engineering side to it.”
