Looking ahead to Battle of Boat

The Battle of Boat is an original musical by composer Ethan Lewis Malty and lyricist Jenna Donnelly.

Together, Maltby and Donnelly have created an extraordinary theatrical piece suitable for the whole family. Set during WW1, it follows the adventures of a group of children trying to find their place in a world at war. Heart-warming, funny, emotional and exciting, the musical is performed entirely by pupils aged 9 to 18 from St. David’s College.

In just five days’ time the show will open in Venue Cymru, in Llandudno, so the excitement has reached fever pitch at school. The full-dress rehearsal is taking place on Sunday. It will be the first time The Battle of Boat will be performed in Wales.

“The production links beautifully with the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War,” said Jennifer Appleton, Head of Drama at SDC.

“It’s about a group of children finding their place in a world of war.

“It also links well with recent class school trips to the Great War’s battlefields in France,” she added.

Mrs Appleton admits the production is a bit of a gamble, as the show is largely unknown.

“I saw it in London when the National Youth Music Theatre performed it, and thought it was magical and knew then that we had to do it at St David’s,” she said.

“It’s been a challenging production as the cast is largely a younger one, but there are older cast members in it too, they’ve really stepped up to the mark and I’m hoping it will be one of the best productions we’ve ever done.”

Mrs Appleton added: “I’m not interested in people thinking afterwards that was a good school production, I want them to think it was a wonderful production in it’s own right.”
