SDC takes on the rest of Wales - X Country

Nine SDC students gallantly represented the county of Eryri in the Welsh Schools XC champs down in a snowy Brecon on Wednesday.

The whole Eryri squad finished an incredible second overall - a mere four points behind the mighty region of Cardiff.

The stand out performance from the SDC crowd was Lois Lee in the senior girls. Lois ran superbly - setting off bravely from the start and using her fell running strength to pick runners off on the climbs - this resulted in Lois finishing in a highly deserved eighth place overall. She'll be the first ever SDC student to represent Wales in the British championships in Nottingham in two weeks’ time. Perhaps what is even more extraordinary is that Lois only started running cross-country two years ago.

The 17-year-old from Prestatyn said: “I came to St David’s two years ago and took part in the inter house cross country race that I ended up winning.

“It was a surprise for me as I’d never even done a cross-country race before. After that I started taking part in Mr Matthew Robert’s fell-running activity and discovered I enjoyed it and was pretty good.

“I do a lot of training by myself too. When I get home in the evening I’ll go out for a run usually a five to ten-mile circuit, then I’ll do my school work.”

Lois added: “I’m hugely proud to run for Wales, but it’s going to be a tough one as standards will be very high.”

Also, in Lois' race, SDC's Kiani Geldard and Niamh Parry ran well to finish in 41st and 40th.

In the senior boys, there was a tight fought battle between Kieran Forrest and Max Dunford, Kieran finishing 16th and Max 19th. The lads were ably backed up by Aiden O'Leary in 34th, George Latham in 41st and Hayden Cole in 46th.

In the junior boys Gilbert Vaughan - representing Eryri for the second consecutive year ran strongly to finish in 32nd - a top performance in a field which included boys from the year above. Gilbert also won a silver medal for the team on the day.
