Marauding cubs take spoils

The Saint Davids U14’s took part in their first tour this weekend in the not so sunny climbs of the West Midlands.

The first game saw them pitted against Lichfield Cathedral school. Sadly they had several injuries; but in the spirit of rugby the SDC boys were happy to don the opposition shirts and play to make the game an even contest. It was obvious early on that the SDC teams powerful running and off loading would be difficult to stop and even in the rain they ran out comfortable winners.

Harribo Hit went to the irrepressible George Owen for a wonderful try saving tackle, covering 30 meters to bundle the Lichfield player over the touch line.

Champagne moment went to our Tanzanian Tornado Jasper who pulled of an offload that even Hudini would have marvelled at.

After an evening refueling and swapping stories we travelled to the once high flying Birmigham Moseley rugby club. We were to play Moseley first then the much vaunted Kenilworth second.

As we approached the boys were met by an imposing stand and rugby club and they were more than a little daunted by the prospect of the games.

The first game was all about amazing defence. When Moseley couldn’t go through us they tried to go round and again they again were repulsed by superb tackling. The game was sealed with pin point kick pass from inside the opposition 22 for the full back to score. With three tries SDC has taken a notable scalp.

Up next we’re Kenilworth and much bigger opposition, who scored first after several phases of play, but it was this try and a thumping tackle from Center Riley that sparked the team into life! Superb retention of the ball and determination saw them run out 27-10 winners.

A very literal (St) David & Golliath Moment.

Tour champagne Moment- went to fly half Booth for his vision and precision and kick pass.

Tour Harribo Hit- Riley who got through so much work and big tackles for one so young.

Tour lion- Went to Olly Hughes a year 8 playing up a year. He ran tackled and gave his all through the whole weeken.

A real pleasure to take such a great bunch of boys on their first tour. (Of many I hope)
