Hannah's Ugandan Enterprise

To help fund a forthcoming school trip to Uganda, an enterprising SDC pupil has come up with an idea that will also empower disabled people in the East African nation.

Link International have been taking students to Uganda since 2005, allowing them to visit and help in local communities.

One of the projects SDC has been involved with is Alli Crafts, founded in 2014 by Fran Hall, a niece of the school chaplain Rev Tim Hall.

Fran who has a passion for helping disabled people and their families, has focused on providing sewing and tailoring classes to parents and carers of the disabled. The products made and sold through Alli Crafts help provide a small income to support families.

In poverty- stricken Uganda, children and adults with special needs are largely seen as a burden on families and resources. Unfortunately, this means they are often mistreated, neglected and even shunned by their families and by society. Sadly, on top of this, mothers are often blamed for their children’s disability and can consequently be divorced by their husbands.

Hannah Czakan, a Year 12 pupil, wants to raise money by selling the products the women are making in Uganda. The money made will go back to the African families and will help her raise money to enable her to go to Uganda next Summer.

Hannah, who is studying business, geography and science A ‘level, said: “I feel I am able to help the women in Uganda whilst in the UK by selling their products that they have made so beautifully.”

The 16-year-old continued: “I am really looking forward to meeting them and their families and supporting Fran in her work.

“I’ve already set up an Instagram page to show the latest products available the Ugandan women have made.

“I’ve also roped in some of my friends at SDC to model some of the clothes which are ready for purchase!”

Products include wallets, wash bags and skirts all printed in eye-catching African textiles.

You will be able to spot Hannah with her goodies at various school events. If you are interested in any of the products please email her on hannahczakan@gmail.com, to view more products go to alli_crafts_uganda.
