(Ultra)Marathon Man John

A balaclava, snow shoes and goggles aren’t your normal requirements for a running race, that is unless it’s in Iceland in the depths of winter.

Snowdon house assistant John Chambers is in training for one of the toughest endurance events on earth-a 60 hour race called the Agoge.

Only 100 runners can enter and less than a third are expected to complete the event.

“The googles and balaclava will help stop my face from freezing off,” laughed the 28-year-old who is a former pupil at the school.

“The temperature will be around -5C, but it’s the wind chill that will be the killer.”

The 2017 Ultra World Championship in Iceland is just one of many endurance races John has taken part in this year.

During the October half-term and for the second year running he took part in the 32nd Venice Marathon.

“I took nine minutes off my time from last year, finishing in 3hr 45 minutes.

“It’s an incredibly scenic marathon as you run over the Grand Canal and into St Mark’s Square.”

John who studied product design at university, admitted only half-jokingly he’s addicted to suffering.

“It’s all about having the right mindset and doing the right training,” said the man who after this interview was off for an afternoon stroll up Snowdon.

“A lot of the endurance races play with your mind, many of the runners break and people ask me how I can still remain cheerful six laps into a race and then being asked to do 600 burpees at the end.

“I do these races because they are very hard, I like to challenge myself.”
