5 personal bests for Summer

St David’s College pupil Summer Best recently competed in the Welsh Open national swimming gala, in Swansea.

The 14-year-old achieved five personal bests and made three finals in which she gained three medals-two silvers and a bronze, in the 200m, 100m and 50m breaststroke.

Summer’s results put her third in Wales for breaststroke and she’ll be joining the Welsh national skill squad.

Summer’s mother Elsa is head coach at the swimming club at Llandudno’s swimming pool.

“I train seven times a week in Llandudno, getting up 5.30am five mornings a week,” said Summer.

“I also swim two evenings a week, and go to the gym on a Friday night to do stretches and so on.

“The training can get a bit dull, but I love competing. My next big gala is in Swansea for the winter nationals, I’m looking forward to it.”

She added: “If it’s a possibility I’d love to become a professional swimmer, my hero is the British swimmer Adam Peaty, who specialises in breaststroke.”

UPDATE: Since this article was written Summer is now 15th in Britain for 100m breaststroke. The top 16 in Britain are recognised by British Swimming as elite.
