Multi Award Winners!

Elin and Ella just two of the many BDA Award winners

SDC swept the boards at the recent British Dyslexia Awards, winning six awards for poetry, photography, art and writing.

The theme of the awards was about celebrating dyslexia through creativity.

The panel of judges included Lord Addington the President of the BDA, who said he was

“very impressed” with the quality of the written work and the creativity of the art and photography.

The award winners from SDC included Second Place Winner – Freddie Banham, 11, from Llandudno, for writing aged five to 11, Zachery Valentine, 13, from Wrexham, was awarded a first for writing aged 12-17, and Ella Warren-Roberts, 12, from Caernarfon, clinched second place for her poem about dyslexia. Ella also claimed an impressive first place in the photography category.

Zachery Valentine said: “Despite being dyslexic I love reading, my favourite author is George Orwell, I love his books 1984 and Animal Farm.

“We are at present studying the First World War poets like Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sasson, it’s incredible they wrote such beautiful poems when they were seeing such carnage and brutality.”

“I don’t see dyslexia as a barrier, it just means you see the world in a different way and that’s what my poem is about,” added Zach.

Jack Ross-Bowker, 11, clinched a first place for his photograph, in the five to 11 age group. Art winners included Callum Frauchinger, 13, who was awarded a second place and Elin Mai Passey, 18, from Abergele, was awarded first place.

Art teacher Mari Hughes said: “The Art Department would like to congratulate and thank all the students who took part in ‘The Dyslexia Awareness Week’ competition. We are extremely proud of our achievements in this national competition, demonstrating our talented students’ artistic and photographic skills. Well done!”

Head of English Jennifer Turner said: “It’s the first time we’ve ever entered the awards, and our success shows pupils with dyslexia can be just as creative in the written word and be successful.”
