Another award for Rachna

SDC pupil Rachna Udasi has clinched another national award for her entrepreneurial skills.

The 17-year-old also won social entrepreneur of the year award at a ceremony in London last week from an organisation called Ultra Education – held at PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

Earlier this year she beat thousands of entries to win the National Tenner Challenge award for Most Inspiring Individual.

The teenager has set up a coffee supply business to help Ugandan children struggling with dyslexia.

Rachna said she chose coffee because it is a mass market product and she knew there would be demand for it.

“The more the demand for the coffee beans the more the profit for the local woman in Uganda who grow and harvest the coffee,” said Rachna.

“This is helpful as the women receive a real wage, thereby breaking the cycle of poverty that is prevalent in Uganda.

“The profit I make will go to children who have dyslexia.”

Rachna, who is a boarder at SDC, is studying design and technology, English literature and Business BTEC. She is hoping to go on and study business at Kingston University in London.

She said: “I was asked to apply for the Ultra Education Awards, and the organisers had spotted a newspaper article about me winning the £10 Challenge Award.

“They interviewed me on the phone, and then I was invited to attend the awards in London, but I never thought I’d then go on and win an award.”

She continued: “I really enjoyed meeting the other nominees and award winners.

“I met a CEO who is only nine-years-old who already has four employees!

“Another inspiring person I talked to was also nine, who is known to be one of the smartest kids in the UK.

“By the age of six he was studying philosophy and history at Oxford University!”

Rachna’s coffee business is going from strength to strength. She is currently concentrating on marketing and designing a new logo for her coffee brand.

Next summer she will be going to Uganda to visit the women and children she is so determined to help.
