Georgia Rugby Tour

Man of the match

St David’s College in North Wales pulled off a first for any UK school by touring their 1st Team Rugby Squad in Georgia this Easter Holidays. Having just returned they reminisce on the welcome, the hospitality and the rugby.

Prior to their first match, the team put their Welsh stamp on the visit with a rendition of “Bread of Heaven”, on the steps of the Shevardeni base.

Head of Physical Education at St David’s, Dan Lycett, previously visited Georgia as captain of the Bulldogs team and was determined to share his experience with the school’s rugby enthusiasts.

Dan Lycett was quoted in the Georgia Today paper, “This is my second year in this role, and since I started I wanted to reinvigorate rugby in the school. Sport is important when it comes to boosting morale, and with regards to Georgia it is also vital that UK schools come to places like this, to raise awareness.”

Greeted by the British Ambassador and experiencing a training session with Georgian head coach, Milton Haig, Harri Mostyn-Jones, speaking on behalf of his team, said that the trip had been such a privilege. The President of the Georgian Rugby Union, Gocha Svanidze, congratulated the team on the tour.

Georgia Today reports that “Team captain Harri Mostyn-Jones, 18, was singled out for praise by one of the Georgian academy coaches”. The final accolade was given to Harri as Man of the Match in the fixture against Khvamli.
