With only 14 fit players the SDC Lions stepped onto at soft pitch at Kirkham Lancashire. Players playing in their first games, out of position, but with pride. Stepped up and played with an amazing passion and elan. The beginning of the game the SDC pack matched the larger opposition Pack, which they did, but it was their smart handling and use of space which proved the source of their points (and that of their kicking hooker Lyons).
From one kick return the team shifted the ball quickly from one wing to another, Gilmartin used his power to crash up to the half way line. Slick handling and twinkling feet from Riley took them to the line, the forwards added a pinch of muscle and scrum half Thomas capped a great half of the year with a pick and go to score.
A similar approach from a long kick, returned by Santi saw control and focus added by such a young team and fly half again saw an opening to scoot over.
Lyons felt he had secured the points, only for Kirkham to play into a boggy corner score and their number 10 to convert the try to break SDC hearts by 2 points. A draw would have been fair but playing with 14 men took its toll in the end.
A proud coach, a bruised team, but a good Christmas break and we will be back to Cup Season and Sevens in the New Year.
Champagne moment: Lyon converting from the touch line.
Harribo Hit: George ‘The Wall’ Palmer Hall doing a very good Dan Jones impression.
Lion of the game: Palmer Hall. Left it all on the pitch.
