The 1st XV returned to cup action today on the hunt for a semi final place. Ysgol Berwyn standing between them and the spoils.
SDC chose to play into a very strong wind and played very controlled rugby and looked secure with the ball in hand, the forwards making the Bala schools defence work very hard. Sadly the wind curtailed several moves and the ball was spilled far too regularly.
The SDC pack dominated the opening scrum exchanges and were able to starve the Berwyn back line of ball. Yet it was the wind that was to have the say during the day that provided the traveling team with a long kick and good chase and a try close in from the resulting Ruck.
SDC were now struggeling to make ground into the strong wing, from another Berwyn long kick the ball fell to winger Cole who pinned his ears back and stepped past several opposition players, from the resulting Ruck front row forward Railton broke smartly brushing of would be tacklers at will. This move sparked SDC into life and strong runs from forwards and backs alike saw SDC turn round at half time 10-5 at the half time. The second half was dominated by probing kicks from Roberts at ten and Latham at nine.
The game was sealed by a barmatorming run from open side Jones who was ever present in attack and defence. With the try converted SDC lead 17-5 and looked comfortable. But Berwyn had other ideas and a try wide out set up a nervy last 15 minutes. But the SDC defence was resolute and all 19 players should be proud of a never say die attitude and another cup win. Onwards into the semi finals along side the U15’s who are into the quarter finals.
Champagne Moment- Railton bullocking run in the first half that kick started the charge into the lead.
Harribo Hit- Two players where in line for this. Latham who chased down a high ball from Roberts and put in a crunching hit on the opposition full back, but the winner this week is Cardwell who’s enormous tackle Will talked about long into the night!
Lion- The whole team played very well; defence was strong throughout, the set peice was almost faultless, but the Lion must be taken by tight head prop C.Railton he tackled like a back row and carried like an 8. Well deserved.
