St Davids 1stXV welcomed Llandrillo College for the first time to the Senior Field. This friendly was aimed to give some of their squad players game time and we hope this can become a permanent fixture in the future.
To give the game context the St Davids team have been building over the past few games and this game posed a real test, the aim was to play against bigger and well organised team. “To get better we need to play the best”.
Pre game nerves were eveident and the sight of a big pack set the boys wondering, but both Captains settled the players nerves during the pre match warm up.
The game opened well for The Lions with good control in their 22 saw Fly Half Roberts clear long with a superb chase. Nerves settled.
It was SDC who struck first through Molone who made several carries before his try. Minutes later Lyons drove over from a line out. Llandrillo struck back using their size and quick ball to go in at half time 7 12 down. The second half Llandrillo came out with real intent and stretched the SDC defence, which was breached to make the score 12 all just minutes into the second half.
SDC showed real intent to use all the ball they had with speed and guile, attacking from deep in their own half and 22. Roberts and Mace were key throughout and their attacking intent was key to the SDC game.
Malone and Best, now a tried and tested partnership in mid field made several telling breaks and both rewarded with tries.
College were blighted with injuries and sadly ended the game with 13 players. We wish the players a speedy recovery.
What came from the game was that the vintage of 2018-19 are a keen, tenacious group, keen to run and play rugby at all times. Entertainment is now being paired with the ability to control games and create opprotunites all areas of the pitch.
