St Davids 1stXV & U15’s made the early morning trip for the first (of many we hope) games vs St Edwards College. St Edwards a former boys grammar school is now the third merysyside team that St Davids face.
A crisp morning saw both teams trade blows on a heavy pitch, St Edwards using their big pack to gain yards, whilst The SDC Lions tried to play with width and speed. St Edwards struck first through a penalty and then right at the end of the first half after a poor kick was seized upon. Which gave the home team a solid 10 pint lead at half time.
The Saint David’s pack was dominant at set peice, both scrum and lineout. It was the latter that saw Ted Lyons claim his third try of the season, driving a maul over the line like a seasoned pro. Roberts added the extras.
It was fly half Roberts game management that stood out using superb kicking to pin the opposition back In their half. St Davids did have periods of dominance, but furtratingly didn’t come away with points when they could. St Davids lead grabbing try came from Co-Captain Goodwin, who had an outstanding game, as he stripped the opposition of the ball and set off to score under the posts. Again the now metronomic Roberts slotted the extras. The lions now absorbed the St Edwards efforts to score with Herculean and we’ll disciplined defence and excellent exit play.
The game saw the team play with control, composure and intent. All of this away from home against a big and tenacious opposition.
