If you pass the music studio during a break time you’ll hear the faint twang of a power chord, the dull thud of a bass drum and the tuneful growl of a voice. You’d probably think it was a group of pupils having a jam, but the choice of full on dad rock anthems and missing members of staff say something different is rocking the studio walls. This is a school band made up of staff who beneath their crisp shirts and straight ties just want to be boys in a rock band. ‘Something for the Mums’ is about to erupt on the SDC music scene.
Head of Science, Andy Goodwin, is the lead singer of this burgeoning band, and he’s joined by Head of Admissions, John Rogowski, on the drums, Head of Communications, Matt Gower, on rhythm guitar, Ian Martin, Outdoor Education teacher, on bass guitar and Ian Hays, guitar teacher, is on lead guitar.
This motley crew have been rehearsing for weeks in the music department studio and will be performing a set of four songs at the summer fair, including Bryan Adams’s Run To You, Kings of Leon Use Somebody, Wherever You Will Go by The Calling and Summer of 69 by Mr Adams again.
Matt said: “Andrew Goodwin was asked to put together a band for band night by a pupil, who had heard him sing.
“Andy went to John first as he knew he plays drums in a local band, and John mentioned I played the guitar, the two Ian’s joined about a week after.”
The band’s name came about after Matt’s daughter made a quip on band night that they were ‘Something for the Mums’ - the name stuck.
The band went down a storm on band night, and they had so much fun they decided to continue to jam together.
“We rehearse three times a week in the music studio during our breaks, and it’s just a really nice way to break up our day. I think it’s good for pupils to see staff playing music and having fun. Not enough young people are starting bands together but it’s a great lifelong skill to learn to an instrument and play alongside other musicians, even as an adult” said Matt, who has been working at SDC for five years.
“We are even beginning to gain more confidence and John has mentioned going to some open mic nights locally.”
John’s two sons Alex and Tom, who are both SDC pupils, are in the band Mad Heaven, for years they have gigged all over North Wales and the North West of England and have gained an ever increasing following. A few months ago, they released their first EP, and have been played on BBC Radio Wales.
