The English department at St David’s College is thriving with pass rates of over 93% at GCSE in English language.
Jennifer Turner is head of English and literacy coordinator at SDC. She has been teaching English for 12 years and loves nothing more than finding ways for pupils to have fun and learn both in and out of the classroom. Her department is awash with talent with highly qualified staff who teach in a creative way.
Mrs Turner herself plans activities for a minimum of one lesson every fortnight that will take place outside of the classroom. Some of these activities are school trips, but many take place in the school grounds.
She said: “Not many of my pupils are the stature of Michael Jordan, but they soon dream of his success when doing a quiz and using the basketball hoop for scoring. As with Penalty Shootout, it is another fun way of keeping score that includes that extra competitive edge to the occasion.”
“Our results have been consistently good, especially in English Language GCSE where we have a pass rate of over 93% grade C and above, equivalent to a level four and five in the new grading system,” said Mrs Turner.
“I think it’s because straight away in Year Seven we start building up the skills they will need, it’s also the way we teach and of course having smaller class sizes always help and as staff we go that extra mile to help our pupils.”
