BEN ROBERTS (1995)
Ben S Roberts, Managing Director of North Wales based Jewellery brand Clogau Gold, has been named Bangor University Business Person of the Year at the Daily Post's Achievement Wales 2009 Business Awards held on Friday 4th of December.
Ben joined St David's College from Rydal Prep School in 1989 and left having successfully completed his 6th Form studies in 1995.
This top accolade is said to celebrate the person that, according to the Daily Post, "truly stands out from other business men and women, helping to grow not only the reputation of their respective organisation but also the region, showing the entrepreneurial spirit that typifies the region's resilience and resurgence".
At the grand old age of 32, Ben Roberts is one the youngest to ever receive this prestigious award; Ben remarks, "Awards like these are a fantastic accolade but I really must point out that this is more of an award for the team than just myself. I'm very fortunate to have such a dedicated team and the success in all areas of the business over the last three years is down to one simple factor - we're all working towards the same goal. We all want the same things for the company, to continue growing and producing great Jewellery which is quintessentially Clogau."
Despite having achieved great results throughout 2009, Roberts is looking ahead to 2010 with great anticipation;
"One thing is for certain though, we're not out of the woods yet as far as the economy is concerned which will make next year a very interesting one. Therefore, I think that the cautious consumer is here to stay for at least another year. For Clogau, this is compounded further by hikes in gold prices and a fluctuating currency market making 2010 very difficult to call. I'm positive though, that the growth we've been experiencing over the last few years will offer enough momentum to see us continue to promote our unique style to even more new markets and with even greater success".
Having taken over the leading role of Managing Director from his father William Roberts only a few years ago, Ben reflects on the journey that the brand has faced since its infancy remarking that; "it's fabulous to get recognition at the end of a year like 2009 and totally unexpected. Seeing the transition first hand as Clogau has developed from a cottage industry business, producing just a 5 piece range for souvenir shops in Snowdonia, into Clogau Gold the brand which has established itself firmly on the highstreet and on many people's Christmas wish lists this year, is just the most exciting feeling for me".
In summary though, we have some fantastic new jewellery being launched throughout next year and I'm positive that we'll continue to market these as expertly as we have so far this year, although inevitably Clogau Gold jewellery will always speak for itself and the marketing is secondary to some extent."
